There are a lot of rules that exist to protect the lowest common denominator of society. Most people don't know anything about amps or the wire gauge needed to safely operate a certain load over a certain length. If you saw all the things plugged in under my desk, you might think my place is gonna burn down, but the load is only about 6 amps max with all the little things plugged in.
